Information about Gjirokastra
Gjirokastra is a city in southern Albania with a population of around 34,000. Lying in the historical region of Epirus, it is also the capital of both the Gjirokastra District and the larger Gjirokastra County. Its old town is inscribed on the World Heritage List as "a rare example of a well-preserved Ottoman town, built by farmers of large estate." The city has an Albanian majority, and it is home to a minority of about 4,000 Greeks, as well as communities of Vlachs and Roma. Gjirokastra is considered the center of the Greek community in Albania.
