Just Cruisin 4 day Kangaroo Island

Day 1: Depart Adelaide approximately 7:00AM for Kangaroo Island. We travel along some of South Australia’s magnificent coastline to Cape Jervis where we board the Kangaroo Island Sealink to Penneshaw. On arrival we take some time discovering Penneshaw which is situated on the north-east coast of Kangaroo Island, offering a commanding view of the mainland just 18 kilometres away across Backstairs Passage. We now follow the coast to Antechamber Bay and Chapman River.

At Antechamber Bay there are wonderful views of Antechamber’s long wide stretch of beach, with the mainland in the background. Chapman River runs from Lashmar Lagoon into Antechamber Bay, it is here we have morning tea and a stroll down the beach will reveal the startling splendour of Antechamber Bay. Cape Willoughby Lighthouse is our next stop. This was the first lighthouse built in South Australia, completed in 1852. Adjacent to the lighthouse is the rugged Devil’s Kitchen. We now head to Kingscote via Windmill Bay. The beach here is covered with almost perfectly round rocks and pebbles; a look at the roaring surf as it crashes over the rocks soon gives you a clue to their formation. The beach also has a freshwater well, which provides water for stock.

Along the way to Prospect Hill The hill is the highest point in the area and provides a marvellous view of Pelican Lagoon, the rolling hills and the Southern Ocean at Pennington Bay which is a wonderful surf beach. On a clear day looking north you can see Mount Lofty in the Adelaide Hills. Overnight Kingscote. Tonight we can watch the Pelicans feeding at the wharf.

Day 2: Today we visit the south coast of the island. Our first stop is Seal Bay Conservation Park. Seal Bay is a large sandy beach and dune area where Australian sea lions rest and nurse their young. We see these rare sea lions under the guidance of a National Parks Ranger. We walk on the beach within a few metres of the resting sea lions, basking in the sun.

Our next stop is Little Sahara, an area of spectacular white sand dunes surrounded by bush vegetation. Climbing over the first ridge you are confronted by a second and much higher dune, which when scaled reveals more dunes flanked by bushland. We leave the desert and head for Murray Lagoon, a naturalist’s delight, for a stroll where we see the habitat of many species of water birds. From here we travel to D’Estrees Bay, an attractive area that has seen a lot of history with the establishment of a whaling station and the wrecks of ships. Shore wading birds and pelicans are a common sight on the long stretches of beach here.
    Overnight Flinders Chase Farm.

Day 3: Our destination today is the south-west coast. Vivonne Bay is our first stop, and can only be described as stunningly beautiful. Vivonne Bay is the only safe harbour on the south coast of the island and is the base cray fishing and game fishing boats. Kelly Hill Caves is our next destination. It is an area of undulating limestone ridge covered in dense mallee scrub with stunted coastal heath along the coastline. At Kelly Hill, sinkholes and caverns lead to caves of ornate calcite formations, we have a tour of the largest cave with a National Parks and Wildlife guide. We now enter Flinders Chase National Park, one of Australia’s largest covering 74,000 hectares. Here you will see many of the animals and birds you have come to see.

At Rocky River it is possible to view koalas in the nearby trees. At Cape du Couedic we view the lighthouse which was constructed in 1906 and considered to be the islands finest structure. We then proceed down a walkway to Admirals Arch, the home to a colony of New Zealand Fur Seals. We travel east to Remarkable Rocks; a cluster of huge, weather sculptured granite boulders perched on a granite dome that swoops 75 metres to the sea. Overnight Flinders Chase Farm.

Day 4: Today we take in the sights around Kingscote. If time permits we will visit a honey farm. After morning tea we head to Penneshaw where we board the Kangaroo Island Sealink for trip back to Cape Jervis. We now head to Adelaide, arriving approximately 10:00PM.
