    Special purchases include: ceramics and hand-beaten copperware from Dinant; Belgian chocolates, which famous all over the world; crystals from Val Saint Lambert. In 1826 the old Cistercian abbey of Val Saint-Lambert close to Seraing near Liège in Belgium was transformed into a radiant centre for the crystal industry; diamonds and jewelry from Antwerp. Traditionally, Antwerp is the biggest in world centre of the diamond trading industry, though recently also Indian traders became evolved; lace from Bruges. Lace is a lightweight, openwork fabric, patterned with open holes in the work, made by machine or by hand. Lace-making is an ancient craft. True lace was not made until the late 15th and early 16th centuries; Brussels and Mechelen (Malines) woodcarvings - historically famous Mechlinian wood carving - from Spa and bandes dessinées (comic-strip books) by a number of talented Belgian cartoon artists from Brussels.

    If it's antiques you're after, then go either to the Sablon in Brussels for the gaspingly expensive or the more bric-a-brac rues Haute and Blaes and the decidedly down-market flea market on Place du Jeu de Balle.

    Main shopping centers are located in Antwerp, Bruges, Brussels, Ghent, Liege, Mechelen, Mons, Namur and Ostend.
