Brussels is the official capital city of Belgium, which is bordered by the Netherlands, Germany, France and the Atlantic Ocean. It is also the capital of the European Union and headquarters for NATO. More than 1.8 million French and Dutch speaking citizens are spread throughout its 19 municipalities.
Brussels has a cool, oceanic climate with rainfall approximately 200 days of the year. Established as a fortress on the Senne River in the 10th century, Brussels is near the Atlantic and also bordered by the Sinoran Forest.
Brussels is known for its diverse architecture, ranging from medieval to Arts Nouveaux. Sights that must be seen include the Grand Place (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), Laken Castle, the Royal Palace, Cinquantenaire Park, the Royal Museum of Fine Art and the iconic Mannekin Pis statue. In addition, large murals of comic characters are painted on walls throughout the city comprising the world famous Brussels’ Comic Book Route.
