SOFIA / RILA MONASTERY / PLOVDIV 1 Day – Arrival at Sofia Airport. Over night. 2 Day – Full day tour to the Rila Monastery - the richest historical and architectural monument of the Orthodox enclave, founded in 10th century and transformed to the most important spiritual and cultural center of Bulgaria. The Rila Monastery is located in 1147 meters altitude in the middle of the fragrant coniferous forests of Rila Mountain. It is a complex of cultural, dwelling and farming buildings which take about 8800 square meters. The Rila Monastery has an unique architecture and is recognized by UNESCO as part of the world heritage list. Back to Sofia. Overnight. 3 Day – Full day tour to Plovdiv – Before the town of Plovdiv -visit to Bachkovo Monastery. Erected in a magnificent locality along the reaches of the Assenitsa River (29 km south of Plovdiv), the Bachkovo Monastery ranks second after the Rila Monastery both with regard to size, and to architectural, artistic and literary significance. The complex and its neighborhoods have grown into a developed tourist sight where dozens of small shops, stalls, and restaurants stand on both sides of the walkway to the gates and appeal with their variety to visitors. One can find here everything that grows or is being manufactured in the Rhodopi mountain – rare herbs, home-made jams of wild fruit, yogurt and white cheese made of sheep or buffalo’s milk, woolen carpets, etc. Continue to Plovdiv - the capital of Southern Bulgaria, populated since the time of Philip Makedonski - The King of Macedonia. Visit to the Old Town with its cobble streets, typical Bulgarian style houses, the Ancient Amphitheatre, the renovated pedestrian street with its coffee shops and shopping centers. Back to Sofia. Overnight. 4 Day – After the breakfast visit of the Museum of History and Boyana church – UNESCO site. Free afternoon. Overnight. 5 Day – Departure. Transfer to the airport.
