25km. south from the sea capital of Bulgaria - Varna and 500 km east of Sofia lays the impressive nature reserve of the River Kamchia. It originates from the merger of two small rivers springing from the Eastern Stara Planina—Luda Kamchia and Golyama Kamchia—and flows westward into the Black Sea. The Longoza Nature Reserve covers an area of 842 hectares on the low banks of the Kamchia River as it flows into the Black Sea. It is not a usual forest as creepers some of which up to 50 meters long form a green “curtain” that are difficult to pass through. High century-old trees stoop over the river. Sunshine seeping through the branches creates a strange feeling of mystery. What you see there will remind you of a tropical forest. In fact this is the last representative of a longoz (swamp forest) in Europe. Over 40 species of beautiful trees and many species of bushes thrive in this nature reserve. Some rare plants - the swamp snow drop, squall and goldilocks add to the magic of the forest.
Besides various trees and bushes, ferns, reed and yellow water lilies also grow here. This frequently flooded place is protected by UNESCO. The reserve is 40 km long (stretching throughout the longose forest to the river mouth) and 5 km wide at some places. There one can see does, deer, sea hawks, eagles, wild boars and wild cats, among others.
The Kamchia River is one of the most beautiful sights along the Bulgarian coast.
