A three-year-old Marxist government was overthrown in 1973 by a dictatorial military regime led by Augusto PINOCHET, who ruled until a freely elected president was installed in 1990. Sound economic policies, maintained consistently since the 1980s, have contributed to steady growth and have helped secure the country's commitment to democratic and representative government. Chile has increasingly assumed regional and international leadership roles befitting its status as a stable, democratic nation.
CLIMATE OF Chile: temperate; desert in north; Mediterranean in central region; cool and damp in south
RELIGION OF Chile: Roman Catholic 89%, Protestant 11%, Jewish negligible
POPULATION OF Chile: 15,823,957 (July 2004 est.)>
ECONOMY OVERVIEW OF Chile: Chile has a market-oriented economy characterized by a high level of foreign trade. During the early 1990s, Chile's reputation as a role model for economic reform was strengthened when the democratic government of Patricio AYLWIN - which took over from the military in 1990 - deepened the economic reform initiated by the military government. Growth in real GDP averaged 8% during 1991-97, but fell to half that level in 1998 because of tight monetary policies implemented to keep the current account deficit in check and because of lower export earnings - the latter a product of the global financial crisis. A severe drought exacerbated the recession in 1999, reducing crop yields and causing hydroelectric shortfalls and electricity rationing, and Chile experienced negative economic growth for the first time in more than 15 years. Despite the effects of the recession, Chile maintained its reputation for strong financial institutions and sound policy that have given it the strongest sovereign bond rating in South America. By the end of 1999, exports and economic activity had begun to recover, and growth rebounded to 4.2% in 2000. Growth fell back to 3.1% in 2001 and 2.1% in 2002, largely due to lackluster global growth and the devaluation of the Argentine peso, but recovered to 3.2% in 2003. Unemployment, although declining over the past year, remains stubbornly high, putting pressure on President LAGOS to improve living standards. One bright spot was the signing of a free trade agreement with the US, which took effect on 1 January 2004. In 2004, GDP growth is set to accelerate to more than 4% as copper prices rise, export earnings grow, and foreign direct investment picks up.

The work guide was born spontaneously because through photography workshops that I do (I am a professional photographer), many of my students asked me field trips. I really liked the experience and realized that it was very gratifying to know that others enjoy different places and my description. I can finally say I am an explorer of beautiful places and I like that interesant people can appreciate them sensitively as I do.

Deb Sauder: What is there to do in Santiago? I know it is a pretty big city and I want to be able to eat Chilean food, enjoy the culture and the music, and see some of the things that the country has to offer. As a tourist what attractions should I make time to see?
Answer about Chile Al Ramirez: Dear Deb, You should definitely go to the Santa Lucia Hill, the Main square, Plaza de Armas, la Moneda (presidential palace), Bellas Artes Museum (excellent place to spend an hour if you like art & a nice coffee), Bellavista, on the providencia side, the San Cristobal Hill, but try to take the funicular, being that is a very nice ride up. You can also go to Los Dominicos for souveneir shopping, this is the last station on the subway line 1 (red). If you just like a nice coffee or juice, maybe a bar for the evening, you can go to Pedro de Valdivia Station, in Providencia, and you'll see a great deal of bars, coffee houses, and restaurants. Also, there are historical neighborhoods, such as Barriio Paris Londres, Barrio Concha y Toro, and Barrio Yungay, where you can see some impressive architecture from the 1920's. these were the areas where the upper class lived for the first half of the 20th century. In Paris-Londres, there is a house that was used for torture During Pinochet's time, and you have the oldest historical monument in Chile, The San Franciso convent. Enjoy! Al Ramirez
Answer about Chile Mauricio Molina: Hello! Thank you for contacting BeastourChile. If you are coming to Santiago I recomend to visit the Central Market in order to taste the best chilean fresh fish and shell fish we have. This is a popular place where all locals go and tourist too. After that, I recomend during the night to visit some Neighborhood with many atractions for young and adult people in music meaning. People playing at pubs and restaurants, theatre with concert alive. This is about the cultural part of the city. Apart of the description above, I can say that Santiago city is the principal administrative, commercial, cultural, financial and governmental organisms of the country, with the exception of the National Congress located in Valparaiso port, at 1 hour and a half in a trip car towards the coast. Also Santiago is divided in 37 communes, to an average altitude of 1800 feet over sea level. Nowadays it is near 6 million inhabitants, representing 25 % of the total population of the country. In agreement with the above mentioned numbers, Santiago, in addition, is the most inhabited seventh city of Latin America and, according to some estimations, one of 50 metropolitan areas more filled with the world. Santiago is considered to be the third Latin-American city with better quality of life, after Montevideo in Uruguay and Buenos Aires in Argentina, as well as a global city of “alpha class“, at a height of Amsterdam, Stockholm or Rome. Finally, it is considered to be the best second city to do business in Latin America, and 53ª City with major income of the world, with a GDP (PPA) of US$120.000 million in 2010 and a estimated one of US$160.000 million about 2020. The most interesting places to visit being in the city are the following ones: Santa Lucia´s Hill, The Moneda Palace , The Army Square with the Cathedral, central Market, Pre-Columbian Museum, Neighborhood Paris and London,San Cristobal ´s Hill , Neighborhood Bellavista, Neighborhood Vitacura, the Dominicans village, between others as the cultural part. I hope to have answered your consultation and do not hesitate to write again to know any more detail about my city or country.
Answer about Chile Juan Francisco Martinez: In Santiago go for a City tour arround combined with a tour to wine country 40 min. drive away from the city. Mercado Central would be the place for lunch - from chilean tipical food like Pastel de Choclo to a plentilfull sea food meal or different local fish. Musseums, Plaza de Armas, Government Palace, San Cristobal hill for a 360° view of the city and more. Dont miss our Jazz festival in Feb. at Mapocho river side.
Answer about Chile Jaime Liebrecht -ALL SouthAmerica Ports Excursions: You can do a panoramic, cultural, food or whatever but will depend of your time at the city. regards Jaime
