Along with Trogir, Split, island Hvar and River Krka waterfalls, Salona as the most important archaeological site in Croatia. Is one of the must visit places in the region of central Dalmatia.  The tour of the archaeological site of Salona can be organized from your hotels in Split, Makarska, Tucepi, Trogir or any other desired destination in Dalmatia.
From the city of Split we will take a car or coach to reach Salona within 25 minutes drive. We will admire its main attractions and listen to an interesting story of how the former Roman capital was turned into the ancient christian town, and how the life there ended completely in the 7th century AD. We will visit christian 4th century AD cemetery Manastirine, the grave of biscop St.Doimus - martyr from Salona and the patron of Split city, Tusculum-the museum of Salona, christian basilicas, Roman fortifications and the Roman amphitheatre which could accomodate 18,000 spectators...
Salona was first mentioned in 119 BC as the centre of the Illyrian tribe of Delmati. In 78 BC Salona was occupied by the Romans; under the rule of Emperor Augustus it became a political centre of Dalmatia. It reached its peak under Emperor Diocletian who built his palace in the immediate vicinity of the town. Around 614 it was occupied by the Slavs and the Avars who levelled the town with the ground. What can be seen of the ancient city today: in the southern part of the ancient core is a forum with a Roman theatre from the 1st century. A large three-nave early Christian church with an octagonal baptistery existed to the northeast of the theatre. Further in this direction one reaches the Roman amphitheatre dating from the 2nd century.
The preserved parts of the ancient aqueduct are dating from the 1st c., which supplied Salona and the Diocletian's Palace with water from the spring of the Jadro is in the eastern part of the old city. The way leads northwards from the urban basilicas, through the cypress alley to the early Christian graveyard Manastirine, which developed around the tomb of St. Doimus. At the end of the 4th century a large three-nave basilica, was built there.
