Windsor and Eton Still a favourite royal residence, Largest and longest inhabited stronghold in the world. Dating back to 1110 and filled with the cream of the Royal collection, Eton the oldest boy's public school, founded 1440, where the boy's still wear tail coats. Alma Mater to many English Prime Ministers and more recently the Royal princes. Runnymede the site of the signing of Magna Carta in 1215 and the John F. Kennedy Memorial is close by.
Hampton Court The greatest Tudor royal palace of Europe which with Sir Christopher Wren's extensions, set out to compete with Versailles. Started by Henry VIII's Chancellor and Cardinal, Thomas Wolsey, it went on to become Henry's favourite palace. It gives a unique insight into life in Tudor times with its kitchens, gardens, Great Hall and Tudor tennis court. William and Mary used Wren to build new state apartments and the King's Privy Garden, now wonderfully restored.
There is something for all ages to see here. Greenwich The site of the 0 meridian, where the new Millennium actually began. The Royal Observatory is a fascinating museum as is the newly refurbished National Maritime Museum, and Queen's House, and the Painted Hall in Wren's Royal Naval College is a gem. Syon, Osterley, and Ham Houses Three wonderful examples of great aristocratic houses, filled with great portraits by Van Dyke, Kneller, Lely and Reynolds and Robert Adam interiors.
