Windsor Castle, the Queens' favourite royal residence. Largest and longest continously inhabited stronghold in the world. Dating from 1100, the magnificent State Apartment are filled with the cream of the Royal Collection. Also see the 15th C Royal chapel and hear the stories of the Kings and Queens who have lived here.
Hampton Court, the greatest 16th C (Tudor) royal palace of Europe which with late 17th C extensions, set out to compete with Versailles. Started by Henry VIII's Chancellor and Cardinal, Thomas Wolsey, it went on to become Henry's favourite palace. It gives a unique insight into life in Tudor times with its kitchens, gardens, Great Hall and tennis court (still in use today!). Just before 1700, William and Mary added new state apartments, glorious gardens, and the maze.
