At the happy times or 'la Belle Epoque' thanks to the benefits of the Austro-Hungarian Empire Budapest finally was reunited of 3 cities (1873). With enthousiasm, wise planifiaction and good economic foundation the Hungarian capital became a real European one within 30 years. This period made a synthesis of European architecture in Budapest (inspirations came from Britain, Italy, France, Germany and the Orient).
Our walking tour starts at the Parliament (also evoking the events of 1956 anti-communist revolution) through the Liberation square with the Stock Exchange palace to the St. Stephen Basilica which we visit from inside. Next we take the Andrassy avenue (built on the model of the Champs-Elysees in Paris) to visit the luxurious Saxlehner apartment. We pass by the Opera House, the House of Terror (nazi and communist political prison) to arrive to the Heroes' Square and the Millenium castle which are tribute to the landtaking of the Magyar tribes in this country 1100 years ago. We finish the tour by visiting the Szechenyi spa - to see a piece of real social life in Budapest 100 years ago and today.
