The Danube bend used to be and is today the most popular weekend excursion destination for the inhabitants of Budapest. The country's history meets there with a beautiful landscape of mountains, forests and the Danube river.
With our car or minibus first we take a shortcut to arrive to the furthest place of our tour (one hour drive) and then follow the Danube to get back slowly to Budapest. On our way, we stop at the Catholic University with most surprising modern architecture (organic style) full of symbols. We arrive then to Esztergom, the first capital of the Magyar tribes who founded the kingdom of Hungary in year 1000 over there. It is still today the religious capital, seat of the cardinal with Hungary's most important basilica that we visit.
We can see the Danube from above. The river there has been a political border for 87 years (1920-2007) in between Hungary and Slovakia on the other side but no more thanks to the European Union. Our next stop is Visegrad, a fortress in the heart of the Danube bend, the refuge of Hungarian Queens. Although the fortress is today in ruins but has a splendid view on the Danube, the mountains and the forests that used to be a hunting area preserved to the kings. (Best opportunity to have lunch.)
The last stop would be Szentendre, a colorful baroque town on the riverside rebuilt by Serbian merchants after the Turkish wars. Only to walk along the small, curved and narrow streets with colorul facades would be a nice and romantic experience. But due to its charm and proximity to the capital, Szentendre became the workshop of many artists. Not to visit one of the galleries would be an offense to art... Szentendre attracts tourists and...shops.
Luckily, beside many tourist shops we can discover real craftsmen as well or have a taste of Hungary's fine pastries in a good cafe. If the weather and the timetable are fitting together, there is a possibility to return to Budapest by boat.
