We drive towards the west, and through the tunnel under Hvalfjörður (The whale fjords), we reach the rich and fertile valley of Reykholt. We stop at Deildartunguhver, Europe’s most powerful hot spring.
Then we continue to Reykholt, the farmhouse of the most well known middle ages Icelandic historian and political, Snorri Sturlusson, who wrote Heimskringla, a history of the kings of Norway and probably Saga of Egill, one of the most known of the Íslendingasögur (Icelanders' sagas), most of them are also known as family sagas, and they are prose histories describing mostly events that took place in Iceland in the 10th and early 11th centuries.
After lunch, we drive through Kaldidalur (Cold Valley) mountain pass. This will allow us to experience the rugged beauty of the Icelandic highlands. On the way, we stop at the spectacular waterfalls of Hraunfossar (Lavafalls) and Barnafoss. These two falls are beautiful and unusual natural phenomena. The Hraunfossar Falls are clear, cold springs that well up through the lava and run in falls and rapids into the Hvítá River Barnafoss (the waterfall of the children) and we discover the story behind the name of the waterfall.
We continue our drive through the cold valley, passing near Langjökull glacier (the second biggest Iceland´s glacier) until we reach Thingvellir ( the Parilament Valley), the site of the first Icelandic parliament, established in 930, and the starting point of the first Icelandic republic and democracy.
From there, we head back to Reykjavik.Lunch at Reykholt Hotel.
