Airport - Lombok's only airport is Mataram's Selaparang Airport (AMI), which occasionally also shows up in flight schedules as "Ampenan". There are frequent connections to Denpasar on Bali (30 min) and Surabaya (1 hour) on Garuda, Merpati and Germania Trisakti ("GT Air"), but only a single flight per day to Jakarta (on Garuda). Also, you can get to Lombok by boat. Slow boats from Padang Bai on Bali leave about every hour for the four- to five-hour trip to Lembar. Fast ferries run from Benoa on Bali to Lembar on Lombok twice daily in season, one daily in the off season. The trip takes just 2 hours but costs US$25/30 depending on class.
Shopping - The island's inhabitants are known for their artistry in decorative items, pottery, baskets, and woven textiles. A visit to the many villages specializing in these crafts will be a highlight of your trip. Tourism is in its infancy here, and the touts are quite desperate for clients. Our advice is to spread the wealth; get that shoulder massage, tip someone to carry your bag, or make a few well-placed purchases, and you'll be much appreciated and keep the crowds at bay. Ampenan-Mataram-Cakranegara-Sweta: True tourist sights are few, but poking around here, especially around the local market (described as "shocking" by foreigners), can be surprisingly interesting, and this is probably the only place you're guaranteed a true Sasak meal. It's also a good place to pick up cheap spices, especially vanilla.
