Akakus Region – 13 Days
Day 1: Airport - Tripoli
Arrival at airport, Meeting with our assistant who will assist you during the whole journey, Arrival at Tripoli in the evening, Dinner and overnight in hotel.
Day 2: Tripoli - Ghadames (600 Km)
After breakfast, departure through the arid regions of the Libyan plateau to the desert border, where there is Ghadames Oasis. Stop at Gasser Nalut and lunch at Nalut in a typical restaurant. Arrival in evening at Ghadames. Dinner and overnight in hotel.
Day 3: Ghadames
Breakfast in hotel. Full day tour of the old city , the Oasis and museum . Ghadames "The Desert Pearl" known since Roman times (was the most southern point of the Empire), famous for its architecture, typical of this area of the Sahara. Ancient "port of call" for all the caravans coming from Central Africa, it is also the doorway to the Saharan Desert. Lunch in traditional restaurant visiting the Museum and lake Ain Mejazzim . sunset the sand around a campfire with Twareg, music and dances. Overnight in hotel.
Day 4,5,6 : Ghadames - Ghat (700 Km)
Meeting with a Twareg guide and departure (on a 4x4 vehicle equipped for the desert life) southwards to the Sahara desert following an old road that runs along the Algerian border. Sealing on a sea of sand and rocks among dunes like enormous waves, in an endless quietness towards Ghat, crossing the regions of Tinghart and Adhad Ubari. Set-up of the camp near Tanhitan and Bir Atshan. Full board.
Day 7 : Ghat
Ghat is a Twareg town in the middle of the Akakus region, An ancient stopover point for caravans traveling to Mali, it was built at the foot of a rock which is towered over by the day tour remains of an ancient fort. Full day tour of Ghat. Full board. Traditional dinner around a Twareg campfire. Set up camp near the dunes and overnight in tents.
Day 8,9,10: Ghat – Akakus (70 Km)
Leaving from Ghat, descending to the Tadrart Akakus region ,with the most beautiful Saharan landscapes and with the most beautiful prehistoric drawings we know (dating back to 8000-10000A.C) representing animals that live only in the African Savannah, testifying a habitat that has totally disappeared. From the sea of sand rise up rocks like icebergs, that has been transformed by the wind through the centuries into real sculptures or natural arches of rare beauty. The first day you will set up the camp in the Takharkhuri region, the second at Wadi Adad (the region of cave paintings) Full board. Overnight in tents.
Day 11: Al Awaynat - Sabha (410 km)
During the day arrival at Al Awaynat where this off-road journey ends and the Twareg guide leaves us. The tour goes by usual transportation to Sabha, The Fezzan Capital. Full board. Overnight in a little hotel.
Day 12: Sabha - Tripoli (780 km)
After breakfast early departure to Tripoli northwards, leaving the desert behind, passing by Gariat and Garian (last town before the descent from the Libyan plateau to the coast). picnic lunch on the way. Arrival in the late evening in Tripoli. Dinner and overnight in hotel.
Day 13: Tripoli – Sebratha - Airport (145 Km)
After breakfast, departure to Sebratha, Roman City in Tripolitania. Visit to the archaeological excavations famous for the theater ruins, which dominate the panorama with their Impressive scenery (on three levels). Lunch in restaurant near the excavations. Transfer to the airport and departure to your destination. |
