During the last decades, Amsterdam has also become the key place to study for modern architects and those involved in city planning. A once derelict harbour area has been fully redeveloped and is now a shining jewel, home to a culturally and socially diverse group of residents. The city used innovative ideas of a partnering private investors/builders and city government rules. The setup became a mix of smaller and larger apartments, some privately owned homes, some rentals for residential and commercial use. Rentals and mortgages run the gamut from low to high, thus attracting a mixed population.

Each group of architects were given one particular island to develop. One master architect became the overseer of all these other secondary architects, so that, while these latter architects had some freedom or creativity, they had to stay within a given design philosophy. Architecture students from all over the world now come by the busload to study this mixture and genius of planning and of some of great designs.

I can also take you nearby to examples the Amsterdam School of Architecture - to further introduce you to the building styles of the 1920s in Amsterdam. Pay particular attention to the creative, expressive house facades. All facades were carefully planned for aesthetics to create large scale works of art for the inhabitants of Amsterdam and to make a harmonious visual presentation of the city.

Another option is to begin this tour with the famous seventeenth and eigthteenth century houses located along the main canals, the “grachten” canal houses.
