Rotterdam, stunning harbour redevelopment
Culture and History tour in Rotterdam
Tour Price : Depending on starting point. Please email me stating your group size. Duration : About 2 to 3 hours in town. Languages: Dutch, English, German, also with a translator in Japanese and other languages
Enjoy a private and personalized tour of the great city and harbour of Rotterdam, which lasts approximately 2-3 hours. Rotterdam is located southwest of the country’s capital of Amsterdam, in the province of South Holland. From Amsterdam by car, the duration of the one-way-trip is just over 1 hour. This tour will offer a thorough and insightful perspective of Rotterdam’s history up until its present status as a modern harbour and busy metropolis.
As the second largest city in the Netherlands, Rotterdam offers an abundance of sightseeing options. The city has a thriving and innovative art, cultural and social scene. As a sign of the city’s modern flavour, the huge swan-like Erasmus Bridge opened in 1996 and connects the southern and northern parts of Rotterdam.
We may also visit the open air Museum Shipping Harbor, a visual portrayal of the historic Port of Rotterdam.
Unfortunately, Rotterdam’s inner city was obliterated as a result of the German aerial bombardment during World War II. Not only was the port destroyed, but also nearly 98% of the inner city was destroyed. Thus the architecture of the city is relatively new and modern. However, some areas of the city remained untouched from the bombardment, and traces of historical architecture still remain.
Apart from its former glory in the area of trade and commerce, the efforts of various businessmen and entrepreneurs during the 1930’s led to the development of a thriving art and cultural scene. The resulting Boijmans Museum offers a vast collection of high quality paintings and sculptures, and is considered a top-quality fine arts museum of old and modern art.
Tour prices may vary according to number of hours, starting point and group size. Children are very welcome, by the way. I usually take groups with 2 to 10 persons. Extra cost: train or tram or bus tickets.
