The Hague is the capital of the Netherlands and houses all of the government ministeries and embassies. It is also an extremely important center of the fine arts. The Mauritshuis Museum shows the Royal collection of paintings. A treasurehouse of wonderful quality, like a jewel box, and you will see 3 Vermeer paintings and many works by Rembrandt and their comtemporaties. The Gemeentemuseum holds the worlds finest collection of Mondrian paintings and important other collections of paintings and design. The building is an architectural masterpiece by the influential Dutch architect Berlage. Downtown is the center of government with the mediaeval Court and the houses of parlament. Near by is the white, modern town hall designed by Richard Maier, a breathtaking building. We may walk by the stately embassies near by or make a car tour. A visit to the beach promenade will wrap up this wonderful outing. |
