Constructed in the 19th century Elblag Canal (formerly known as Oberlandischer Kanal) is an exceptional place in the world.

This difficult engineering project was designed and managed by chief engineer Georg Jacob Steenke between 1844-58. It connected territories with about 100 yards differences in heights by putting ships on carriage carts on tracks and using pulley wheels and cables to have the ships glide up the hills. Steenke created the system of 5 inclined planes and locks which originally reduced the time for the transport of goods. The canal deals with the 99. 5m difference in water levels by means of a system of slipways, locks, dams and safety gates. Five slipways permit for carrying boats across dry land on railmounted trolleys.

This waterway system makes possible for passengers to travel in small boats which can carry no more than 50 people to sail in the lakes and ride up the inclined planes in the boat.

Please note: it is a seasonal tour operated from May till mid-September.

Elblag Canal is located 1, 5 hour drive from Gdansk centre ( about 90 km). We need to take A-7 way and therefore traffic conditions may vary.

The sail-ride on the boat lasts 2 hours and includes 4 inclined planes. This is the highlight of the whole trip.

After the boat trip , on the way back, we can stop for  lunch and enjoy additional sightseeing in Elblag/Malbork Castle  or a scenic drive in Lowlands.
