| This tour is not only for art connoisseurs. It is also for those, who like to spend some time with the art and culture as well as historical gossip. Gdansk has several museums of good quality and possesses an absolute hit! It has Hans Memling's Last Judgment - the only original work of this artist in Poland! The story of Memling's Last Judgment could be the base for a sensational film. I’ll tell you the story while sitting in front of the triptych... There is also a very interesting Historical Museum in Gdansk. It is good to start with it - as it shows the mentality of the then citizens of the Hanseatic Golden Gdansk. The citizens were merchants - "just merchants" as it was said in those times. 15th, 16th and 17th century Europe was definitely the Europe of aristocracy and nobility. NOT merchants. But in every merchant town on the Baltic this social group was the one that was dictating the conditions. Merchants in the former hanseatic towns were both perfectly educated and extremely wealthy. It is enough to say that Gdansk's merchants financed nearly whole European royalty. They also gave loans to many aristocratic and noble families. The visit in the famous Gdansk Town Hall as well as in the Arthus Court - gives the opportunity to see the taste and megalomania of the former citizens. Also the "whisper of the past" - the historical gossip gives the opportunity to dive into the former centirues. Historical gossip is very imoprtant in the sightseeing, as it depives the tours of teh dryness - and instead of amny dates and "dry" dates - it brings up the life of the places. |
