Booking our Romanian Adventure
It was in the second half of November of last year when we got in contact with several Romanian tour guides. Our 13 day tour is still on and we arrive to Bucharest in early June but now using a different tour operator. Though in November, after examining the various proposed tours we've decided for the services of Liviu Tudor. He is based in Bucharest. He claimed to have many years of expertise in guiding. We took that for granted and never asked for any actual reference. The tour he offered was interesting and the price seemed to be right for us. For a 12 night accommodation with breakfast we were suppose to pay 1,799 Euro per person.
The first issues occured when we asked for hotel vouchers. It just happened to us before: even though we paid the tour in full, bookings were not made nor did we have any papers at hand to prove we were actually booked - that is except for a bill for the entire package. At this point we were turned down by Mr Tudor on the grounds of not having paid yet.
The second problem was the price breakdown - which he kindly provided: turned out accommodations were exactly 1,001 Euro while cost of the car, tour guide services and his expenses, were close to 2,500 Euro. Gasoline was quoted separately. Another separate item was admission fees to museums and cathedrals which were a stunning....... 170 Euro for both of us while in reality they only amount to less than half of that. Less than half of that!! (We learned after having canceled with Mr Tudor and rebooked with another operator). Bottom line, the quote for the tour guide services and car exceeded what was initially advertised by Mr Tudor by some 20%. We said ok to this and went ahead.
When we later asked about the price per night of each hotel we were diplomatically turned down with a silly expalnation such as "these were secret rates only tour guides get". The fact we were already given a price breakdown was a major favor, which he doesn't normally do. All right, fine by us.
Finally, in early February we've received a letter from Mr Tudor in which he stated that the Novotel Hotel in Bucharest "increased their prices incredibly in 2008" and as a result we should pay more. Turned out the difference was $96. We thought this was not right and asked him to check the option of absorbing this cost after having quoted the tour and guaranteed the price. His answer was he could not pay this extra but rather have us in a more modest hotel where he claimed he....... booked us already. At this point we felt we were played around. We felt we could not trust this man. We suspected extra cost will incur, before or during the tour.
As a result, we eventually cancelled our tour with Mr Tudor. |
