The oldest building in St-Petersburg - the Log House of Peter I - is situated on Peter’s Embankment. Originally this territory was a downtown of the city, The first port, commercial center and first mansions of nobility were located here. All the constructions were made of wood and that is why they didn’t preserve till our days, except for the log house of Peter I. This log house was painted as bricks according to the fashion of those days. Later a stone case was constructed above the log to protect it from the weather. Now it is a memorial museum of Peter I. Inside you can find personal things of the Emperor and made by himself as Peter I mastered 14 crafts professionally. It is interesting that having been a real giant of 6,8 feet tall, Peter preferred small chambers and short ceilings. |
