The Kazan Cathedral is a true gem of Nevsky Prospect. It was created in the style of Classicism to the project of Russian architect Andrei Voronikhin in 1801-1811. The author of this cathedral was inspired by the work of Italian master who created the colonnade of the Saint Peter Cathedral in Vatican. So the colonnade of Kazan Cathedral resembles the one in Vatican. The cathedral is a memorial structure. In 1813 Field Marshal Kutuzov, a hero of the 1812 War, was buried here. Housed in the cathedral are also numerous trophies of the war against Napoleon – banners, and standards, keys from captured fortresses and towns and Marshal Davout’s staff of office. The monuments to Field Marshals Mikhail Kutuzov and Mikhail Barclay de Tolly can be seen on the square in front of the northern facade of the cathedral. It is ironic that during the soviet times a museum of atheism was arranged in this cathedral . Now it is given to church and is active again. |
