The quaint, picturesque village is best known as the birthplace of the innovative French seer, Michel de Nostradamus, but was also the inspiration for many of van Gogh´s finest works. Standing on the crystal-clear waters of the River Sorgue, the L´Isle Sur la Sorgue is home to one of the finest antique markets in Europe. In the afternoon you head into the majestic Alpilles to discover the highlight of the tour, Saint-Remy-de-Provence. It was here that the famous Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh came to recuperate for a year in 1889. The painter stayed in the Maison de Sante Saint-Paul de Mausole monastery which at the time served as a hospital and in little over 53 weeks he churned out no less than 100 drawings and 143 oil paintings, one of which was the masterpiece, “Starry Night.”

After Saint-Remy the tour heads out to Les Baux-de-Provence to learn about the regions fascinating history that dates back to 6000 BCE. But it is the 12th Century castle that is the main attraction as it was from here that the rebellious Manville family led a protestant rising in protest of the Catholic-rulers in the 17th Century. The castle now belongs to the royals of Monaco.
