Culture and History tour in Valletta

My suggested itinerary for a full day round Malta would be to start with a drive round the fortifications of Valletta, the island’s capital. Valletta is stretched on a peninsula and has a harbor on either side. We’ll then be dropped off by the Upper Barracca, these being open grounds on high, and enjoying the most spectacular view of the Grand Harbour.

We’ll then walk down to St. John’s co-Cathedral and tour this magnificent building, to also view the Caravaggio paintings in the Oratory. We’re then picked up to be taken for a drive through Attard, Balzan and Lija, 3 quaint little villages nestled below Mdina. These came to be when the people felt safe enough to live outside a walled city. We can follow up with a walking tour of medieval Mdina, the old Capital, with its narrow winding streets, from all times the seat of the island’s nobility. A drive to Mellieha would allow us a little rest.

The view from by its 300 year-old church is lovely – it is one of Mellieha bay, Gozo and Comino(the sister islands) in the background. We’ll then drive down South along St. Paul’s Bay, St. Julian’s, Sliema, and Ta’ Xbiex, this being a prestigious residential area with some lovely early 20th century homes overlooking a yacht marina. In the afternoon I suggest we visit a pre-historic site such as the Tarxien Temples, a 3-temple complex site ranging between 2,500 and 2,900 B.C. Vittoriosa, the Maritime city is only a 10 minute drive away, this is where the Knights of St. John first settled before building Valletta, a very interesting little place. We will end the tour with a stop in Marsaxlokk, the main fishing village, and another charming little place.
