Wine Tour in Kras and Goriška Brda (Collio)

Wine tasting tour in Ljubljana

Tour Price : On request Duration : 8-12 Languages: English

On the border with Italy lies the land of vineyards and cherry trees - Goriška Brda. Brda in Slovenian means ‘hills’. And in this region there are a lot of them, crowned with a generous scattering of very old villages. These villages are, in turn, surrounded by a variety of fruit trees and vineyards. Cherries from this area have been widely sought after for centuries, and even nowadays, when in season, locals sell them to tourists by the roadside. Otherwise today, the region is well known for its many good wine cellars and very good local wines, thought to be among the best in the world. When you are here you must visit "at least" one local wine cellar to taste local pride (wine). Near Brda is one of the most interesting and spectacular regions in Slovenia, the region of karst (Kras in Slovenian). The Kras region, with its picturesque small villages and towns all made of stone, is unique in this area. The best known of these towns is Štanjel, but other smaller villages such as Križ, Dutovlje and Tomaj also offer an abundance of panoramic views and many excellent restaurants. The distinctive red soil to be found in Kras, is rich in iron, giving a very rich, dark red colour to the locally produced wine - Teran. Another local speciality in Kras is its dry-cured ham on the bone (pršut in Slovenian or prosciutto in Italian) which is air-dried locally and has a very distinctive flavour. Teran, accompanied by a piece of local bread and cheese provides the perfect snack to be enjoyed among the vineyards of Kras. The region is also famous for its multitude of caves – 9000 of them in all, including the longest one in Slovenia the cave of Postojna measuring some 21 kilometres. Over 30 million tourists have so far visited Postojna. For those with walking difficulties, transport around the cave is also provided by electric train. If you prefer more wild and "not touristy" cave you should see awesome sights in Škocjan cave, so far the only site in Slovenia under UNESCO protection, which boasts the biggest underground cavern in the world (500 metres long by 100 metres high). It is also one of the most awesome things to see in Slovenia. The karst region is also known as the home of the Lipizzaner horses. In Lipica, (giving rise to the name “Lipizzaner) a stud farm was established in 1580 by the Austrian archduke Charles for the Spanish riding school in Vienna. Lipizzaners are born grey and brown and after 5 to 10 years they become white. In Lipica you can visit the original stud farm and attend performances put on by the Classical riding school several times a week.
