The second-most populated city in Africa, located in Ethiopia is Addis Ababa. It’s the capital city yet has the status of both a city and a state. It’s often referred to as the political capital of Africa. It’s officially called the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia. The African Union, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa and The Federation of African Societies of Chemistry are located here. The country is populated by a large span of religious communities and contains around eighty nationalities speaking eighty languages. Addis Ababa is considered a safe city as violent or serious crimes are rare. But pick-pockets and con-artists frequent the airport and other highly populated areas.
Points of interest in Addis Ababa include; The National Museum that houses ‘Lucy’ the 3.5 million year old fossil skeleton. Mercato, which is Africa’s largest open air market. It covers several miles and has over 150 stores. St George's Cathedral, this is the site of Haile Selassie’s coronation as the King of Kings in 1930, it also commemorates the defeat over Italy in 1896. Jan Meda Race Ground, a horse racing track where you can also watch traditional Ethiopian sports, such as genna, a sport similar to hockey and gugs, a kind of tag played on horseback.
