Information about Arles

Arles is an ancient city and large commune in the south of France that includes the Camargue Delta between two forks of the Rhone River. Many important Roman archaeological sites and artifacts have been discovered in and around Arles, and are included on the list of important UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The city is known for its Roman and Romanesque Monuments. From the ancient Roman era through the Middle Ages, Arles has preserved its historical treasures beautifully. There are many astonishing architectural marvels in the area, which include such engineering feats as the Roman aqueduct and water mill at Barbegal. Visitors are impressed by the Roman Arena, the Alyscamps Necropolis, the Thermes of Constantine, the Cryptoporticus and the Arles Obelisk.

Arles is also notorious for an unfortunate ear-severing incident involving  Vincent Van Gogh, who created some of his most famous paintings here, including The Night Café and Starry Night over the Rhone.
