Information about Bocas del Toro
A province of Panama consisting of a mainland and several islands is Bocas del Toro. The name means ‘Mouth of the Bull.” The regional capital is Bocas Town. From coral gardens to mangroves or beaches to rainforests, there are plenty of beautiful things to explore in Bocas del Toro.
If you are the adventurous type you might enjoy; scuba diving, snorkeling, surfing, fishing, hiking or sailing. If you like to tour take a Nivida Bat Cave tour or see Toucans in the rainforest. If relaxing is on your agenda the turquoise waters of the Caribbean ocean and numerous beaches offer plenty of peace and solitude. If bird watching is your thing, the only Panamanian nesting site of red-billed tropic-birds can be found here.
Two national parks can be found in the province; Isla Bastimentos National Marine Park and La Amistad International Park. The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute can be found on Colon Island. In Laguna Bocatorita mangroves form a natural aquarium which draws in fish, manatees and bottle-nose dolphins. The shopping is first-class and fun souvenirs to take home are molas. Molas are pieces of cloth handmade by the Kuna Indians. Each piece of material tells a story in the tapestry.
