From the 14th century until the Holocaust of World War II, Kazimierz was historically an important Jewish community in the Krakow district of Poland. No longer an official city, a large section of Kazimierz is nonetheless still known as the Oppidum, the Jewish City. The oldest standing synagogue in Poland, Old Synagogue, is located here, and is now a Jewish history museum.

In addition to this Orthodox fortress synagogue, there are many other synagogues and prayer houses in this community, as well as important Christian churches like the gothic St. Catherine’s Church and the baroque styled Church on the Rock. Visitors to Kazimierz come for the Jewish Cultural Festival in midsummer, and to pay homage to the thousands of Jewish men, women and children who were annihilated by the Germans during the genocide of WWII. 

Other attractions include Market Square (Wolnica) and the Municipal Engineering Museum, as well as great restaurants and souvenir shops.
