Information about St. Petersburg

Founded by Tsar Peter the Great in 1703, St. Petersburg has long been an important port city on the Gulf of Finland in the Baltic Sea. The River Neva flows through the historic center of the city, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in part due to its groups of historical monuments. Summers in St. Petersburg are short and humid, while the winters here are quite long, cold, and wet.

St. Petersburg has a population of over 4.9 million, and has gone through several names before returning to the name St. Petersburg, (or just “Petersburg”.) From 1924 to 1991 it was named Leningrad. Important landmarks in the city include The Hermitage, which is one of the world’s largest art museums. Other notable attractions are Palace Square and the Alexander Column, Petergof, Saint Isaac’s Cathedral, Peter and Paul Fortress on Zayachy Island, and the Winter Palace.
