Information about Bergen

Most people know Bergen simply as “the gateway to the fiords of Norway”. Speaking less poetically, Bergen is a city located on the western coast of Norway. Bergen is incredibly rich in its traditions, history and culture. It has a lot to offer to any kind of tourist: breath-taking views, picturesque places, cultural landmarks, and busy city life.

The winters in Bergen are always mild: the temperature varies from 0C to +5C; as for the summers, it’s +18C almost all the time. Bryggen, which is claimed to be a World Heritage Site, is considered to be one of the most famous medieval settlements of Norway. For more than 400 years Bryggen was controlled by the steads. Nowadays the memory of those times is kept in the local museum of the steads’ union. Art galleries in Bergen have rich collections of inimitable paintings. Among the other landmarks of the city are the following ones: Bryggen museum, St. Mary’s church, or Bergen Aquarium that has lots of rare species of fish, seals and penguins living in their natural environment.

Most people don’t care about historical monuments in Bergen, and come here only because of the breath-taking panoramic views of the city, the ocean and the fjord. Did you know that Bergen was the birthplace of the popular composer Edward Grieg and nowadays you can visit his home at Edvard Grieg Museum Troldhaugen.
