We recently commemorated our Millennium, I wouldn't confirm the date, due to many controversies, but, for sure, Brussels has reports of churches built in the second part of the 10th Century. Most probably, the town really started to grow around a bridge built on The Senne, river crossing Brussels. Don't get confused with The Seine crossing Paris!

Meet your own private guide at your hotel (or any other pre-arranged location). First, we make a stop at the windmills of Bruges for a picture (weather permitting), and then a leisurely drive along the Canal of DAMME to this charming little town. The medieval town of DAMME is only five kilometers away from Bruges and is a much smalller copy of its bigger neighbor.
Hidden in the heart of the Flemish polders, DAMME in recent years became a much appreciated center of gastronomy. Every second Sunday of the month, the quaint town square becomes one big book market. Here we stop and visit the old town with views of the canal and the windmill. Afterwards, we drive through the polders area, and continue our tour to Lisseweghe, a former stop used by the pilgrims on their way to Compostella. Now, it’s really not far to KNOKKE, for a visit to the “For Freedom*” museum (closed on Mondays). On the 1st and 2nd November in 1944, after 5 years of hardship and occupation our region was liberated. During the recapture of the area, also known as operation “Switchback”, approx. 1000 Canadian soldiers were killed. Most of them had an average age between 18 and 25 years old. * Winter time from 11th of November till Easter = For Freedom museum is open only on Saturday & Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm. Summer time from Easter till 11th of November: open every day (except Mondays) from 10 am to 5 pm.
Entrance fees to the museum are included! In case you do not want to visit this museum, this part of the tour is replaced by a drive across the border into the Netherlands (only +/- 10 km’s – 7 miles), to visit SLUIS. In medieval times SLUIS was the gateway to Bruges and Ghent. The belfry is the witness of its glorious past. The windmill in SLUIS is a picture postcard place! You breathe in a different atmosphere and the narrow streets are filled with visitors looking for Dutch specialties. Here there’s some time for shopping. The shops are open on Sundays. Drive back to your hotel and goodbye to your driver / guide.
