Information about Arba Minch

A city located in southern Ethiopia about thirty-one miles from Addia Ababa, is Arba Mich. The city name means ‘forty springs’ as there are forty springs which can be found nearby in the form of bubbling steams beneath the groundwater forest. The city is seated at the foothills of Great Rift Valley overlooking two identical lakes, Lake Abaya and Lake Chamo. Arba Minch is home to many fish farms and is widely known for its abundance of fruit which includes; pineapples, guava, mango, bananas, apples and oranges.

Arba Minch is a popular destination for birdwatchers as 188 recorded species can be found here like the Red-billed Hornbill, Fish Eagle and Abyssinian Ground Hornbill. There are also many animals living in the savannah; Swayne’s Hartebeest, Burchell’s Zebra, Greater Kudo, Anubis Baboon and many others. The lakes are famous for Nile Perch which draw fishermen and crocodiles. There are crocodile ranches and a crocodile and hippo tour available here.

Pottery shops are plentiful and offer bowls, coffee jars and calebashes still used by the local people. Many of the pottery pieces are dark brown and black and decorated in a traditional theme. Ethiopia is famous for having some of the best woven cotton in the world and the colorful cloth is widely available in small roadside shops.
