Only 30 min. from Zagreb, there is a hilly region of Zagroje, with its well known medieval and Renaissance fortresses and numerous Baroque castles ideal for a romantic round-trip. The most famous is Trakoscan. Trakoscan was built in the late 13th century as part of the defense fortification network of the Zagorje principality. In 16th century it became a property of Draskovic family who carried out full restoration between 1840 and 1862. From the end of the Second World War Trakoscan is a unique museum with complete original furniture that was left by owners. Veliki Tabor was built in late 15h century for the noble Ratkaj family. Today it counts among historical monuments of utmost category according to UNESCO classification because of its beautiful Renaissance wall and arcade porches. The recently renovated grand Renaissance fortress of Varazdin has two courtyards also encircled with arcade porches, round towers from the 16th century, and an older strong Gothic prismatic fortress (14th century) overlooking the entrance. The earthen dams and ditches surrounding the fortress have been preserved to the present day.
