Paris essentials: Oú est la gare?
Paris certainly has a lot to offer to the occasional visitor. And the following tips will surely come in handy when trying to get the best time in this beautiful city.
First of all, if you’re planning a rather long stay, make sure to rent an apartment instead of booking a hotel. While living in a hotel certainly has its benefits, renting a room will help you feel the spirit of Paris much easier. First of all, renting an apartment will turn out to be much cheaper, and you will have an easier access to local shops, bakeries and markets, which will set the right vibe for your Paris vacation. Most apartments are usually available for at least of week’s rent, but you can look around for nightly offers as well. There are plenty of sites that offer direct apartment booking, so make sure to spend some time googling before your trip to make sure you have the right accommodation when you arrive to Paris. As example, parisattitude.fr and allorenta.com and feelparis.com
Don’t expect everyone to speak or even understand English. And it would be more pleasant for the locals if you try to learn some basic expressions like bonjour (hello), merci (thank you) and au revoir (goodbye). You’ll see far more smiles when trying to speak French, and isn’t that a good way to make your visit enjoyable? People usually say hello and goodbye when entering and exiting shops, so keep that in mind when visiting the local bakery or market. And if you’re looking forward for some time at the bar, don’t forget to say santé (cheers) when hitting another round of drinks with the locals.
The Métro is the best and most rapid way to get around the city. There are 14 lines and 300 stations that will get you to virtually any part of Paris. A single ride will cost you 1.60 while a 10 ride ticket is cheaper and costs Euro 11.40. The Métro is open from 5:30 in the morning to 00:30 or 1:00 in the night (2:15 in the night on Fridays and Saturdays).
Remember that Monday is a day off for most restaurants, cafes, boutiques and markets in Paris. The Louvre is an exception as it’s only closed on Tuesdays.
Speaking of Louvre, which is certainly a must-see, remember to keep your visit short and down to essentials such as Mona Lisa or the Venus de Milo. The place is really huge and you can waste your entire day with the crowds of tourists exploring the museum.
There are many things you can enjoy in Paris, and sometimes it can be a problem choosing something particular. Make sure to do your research beforehand and consider many interesting places both in Paris and outside the city. Fortunately, there are many sites that can give you a good idea regarding interesting activities.
