The Netherlands, commonly called Holland, is a western European country with a coastline along the North Sea and shared borders with Germany and Belgium. The Netherlands is famous for windmills and tulip fields, historic cities and lovely canals, cheeses and beers and art. It is a picturesque and scenic country, with beautiful countryside and impressive cities that draw visitors year round. 

Amsterdam is the most well-known Dutch city, and the most visited tourist destination in The Netherlands. Amsterdam is known for its splendid medieval architecture, especially in the Old Center, which is an area also world renowned for its Red Light District and liberal attitudes. The city has many beautiful structures, such as the Royal Palace and Oude Kerk, and many important museums including the National Museum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Ann Frank House. Just a few kilometers southeast of Amsterdam are the spectacular Keukenhof Gardens in Lisse, with over 32 hectares of tulip fields, inspirational gardens, exhibition pavilions and splendid sculpture.

The Hague is another widely visited city in Amsterdam, known as an “International City of Justice and Peace”, welcoming many foreign diplomats and ambassadors to its more than 150 global organizations, as well as inviting both Dutch and international tourists to enjoy its popular North Sea beach resorts. Binnenhof is an impressive palatial complex that includes the Knight’s Hall and is the location of the Dutch Parliament. Peace Palace, with the International Court of Justice, is another notable landmark in The Hague. Visitors here often enjoy touring nearby Delft, a medieval town noted for its iconic blue pottery and cheese. 

Just south of The Hague is Rotterdam, which although still maintaining a strong historical center and medieval architecture is also famous for its very modern architecture, as well as for an exciting nightlife, a popular artists’ community and is also the largest port city in Europe. Many North Sea cruise ships make Rotterdam a port-of-call, and the city is a popular vacation destination for visitors from the UK and Norway, and also for many Atlantic cruises, such as Holland America Cruises, that include Rotterdam in their itinerary.
