Located in Bali, Indonesia, is the regency seat of Karangasem, the capital and the largest town, Amlapura. The city is located at the foot of rugged hills and mountains, just south of the Mount Lempuyang Volcano. Amlapura is east Bali’s transport terminal. Puri Agung is located here, it’s the royal palace of the former kings of the region. The building is open to the public and displays furniture, ornate carved doors and a glimpse into the past.
Amlapura has a popular open market where the majority of the shoppers are people buying daily food items. Tourist enjoy an authentic experience where they can buy; clothes, flowers, Balinese ceremony items, pots, pans and food items. Some people are surprised to see meat and produce out in the open, nothing is packaged here. The Pasar Malam is a night market with similar items for sale.
The Tirta Gangga is a highly recommended area to stay in. Here you will find the Tirta Gangga Water Palace. Pools, fountains, stone carvings and statues surrounded by lush gardens. Public transportation is available here but many find renting a bicycle is a less expensive way to see this beautiful city.
