To explore the wonderful and remote heritage of Ancient Egypt you definitely have to visit the city of Aswan, located on the banks of Nile in the southern part of the country. Located near the famous Aswan Dam, the city is a large economic, cultural and transportation hub for this part of Egypt and is definitely worth visiting if you’re looking for a diverse experience. It is the place, where the famous Greek philosopher Eratosthenes made his measurements to calculate the circumference of Earth, noticing that a vertical staff didn’t cast any shadow during the summer solstice here. But it is only a small part of the history associated with this place, which has been a major cultural center for thousands of years.

Aswan’s main attraction, of course, is the Tombs of the Nobles complex at the opposite site of the river, featuring a large number of stone-cut tombs from Ancient Egypt. Just outside the city there is also a series of ancient quarries, where the Ancient Egyptians were producing stones for many of the monuments located all around the country.

The city also features a number of exquisite mosques, many of which are several hundred years old, and a rich Coptic community with several churches around the area. Yet, the most spectacular attraction is, of course, a sailboat ride along Nile, which reaches 3km in width just outside the city.
