The third largest city in Madagascar and the capital of the Vakinankaratra region is Antsirabe. The city is also the agricultural and industrial center of Madagascar. Antsirabe is known for its cool climate, mineral water and hot springs which are scattered around the town. The town is the capital of Rickshaws (wooden passenger carts pulled by men). Factories in town include; tobacco, textiles, flour, milk, oil, paper and cement. The Star Brewery headquarters is located here. They brew Three Horse Beer with mineral water found in Antsirabe. It’s the major beer sold in Madagascar. There is an export processing zone, mosques, Catholic and Lutheran churches located in Antsirabe.

 

One can also visit various workshops producing miniature rickshaws and bicycle , a natural fiber weaving workshop using wild silk, raffia, and sisal, embroidery workshop and small transformation industry of various objects with zebu horn, and without forgetting the fine gem stone cutting workshop.

 

Norwegian missionaries who were attracted by the cool climate and healing properties of the many thermal springs and minerals in the area. The city is sometimes nicknamed "Vichy Malgache" and the name Antsirabe literally means "the place of much salt". Antsirabe is an agricultural and industrial centre of Madagascar. Industries include brewing, flour, milk processing, oil, textiles and cigarette manufacturing. The city is the location of the STAR brewery's headquarter, the major beer brand in Madagascar. Visit the STAR Brewery (Tuesday to Thursday). Agricultural produce of the area include rice, vegetables and fruits, and due to the cool climate, apples, pears, plums and other temperate fruit can be grown in the region.
