Information about Agadir

Near the base of the Atlas Mountains, on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean is Agadir, a major city in Morocco. Some major ports are located here including one of the most popular sardine ports in the world. A commercial port exports cobalt, manganese, zinc and citrus while a port for the use of leisure boats exists. Canneries, restaurants and shops are located within the ports. The majority of the population speaks Berber.

Unlike other cities in Morocco, Agadir has wide streets and modern, updated hotels. The entire city was rebuilt after a major earthquake in 1960. Some tourists claim the area has a Western feeling, much like buildings in the United States. There is a wide range of restaurants available, the specialty being those that offer seafood.

The exceptional beaches and subtropical weather attract many Northern Europeans in the winter months. Aside from water sports and beach activities the area also offers camel rides, shopping at Suq al-Had Market, viewing the ruins of Agadir Kasbah, visiting the Vallee des Oiseaux Zoo or seeing the history museum Municipal du Partimoine Amazigh. Birdwatchers like to visit in the winter months as they can see: ospreys, flamingos, bald ibises and other birds.
