Located just a few miles southeast of Amsterdam on the banks of the Westienderplassen Lake, Aalsmeer was settled in the 1100s. The excellent soil conditions and fortuitous climate have made Aalsmeer the perfect locale for growing flowers and strawberries. In fact, Aalsmeer has become known as “The Flower Capital of the World” for being the locale of numerous nurseries and horticulture centers, as well as for hosting the largest flower market in the world.

The building that houses the flower market is FloraHolland, which is one of the biggest commercial buildings on the planet. Other notable structures in Aalsmeer include the Endemol Television Studios and the Royal de Vries Scheepsbouw buildings next to the Old Ringvaart Canal. The Bloemenlust building is a sports arena and convention center that also hosts many important, tourist attracting events, including many famous music concerts that have made Aalsmeer famous for its music scene as well as for its flowers.
