These places may be not as well-known to the general public outside Holland, but they really boast some nice attractions that highlight some of the oldest traditions of the Dutch culture. And I will be happy to explain some of the peculiarities surrounding these traditions.

First stop is the town of Alkmaar, which is most famous for its old cheese market. It is open only on Fridays, so you’ll have to time your tour booking with respect to the schedule. The market represents a traditional tourist spectacle, where the cheese porters show how the cheese is made. Of course, the bulk of the real cheese is produced by corporate giants nowadays. But still, the spectacle is worth enjoying as it depicts the old traditions of making the best cheese in Holland.

The second part of our tour takes us to Hoorn – a small and beautiful city with a history spanning over seven centuries. The place was always an important trading hub in the area, however things have really boomed when the Dutch East India Company has established one of its offices here. Since then the city has been marked by numerous government building, trade houses, warehouses and other places, which carry the original feel of the past and create a really enticing atmosphere of the times when Holland was one of the most powerful maritime countries in the world.
