Information about Poprad
Poprad is considered to be one of the most important cities in the eastern part of Slovakia. Mountain tourism is thriving here, making this city a cultural and economic center of the Tatras region. The city was founded at the beginning of the 13th century, when the honourable king of Hungary invited the German colonists to move to the region of isolated farming.
Poprad started to thrive and grow only in the times of the industrial revolution, when the railroad was built and large-scale tourism in the nearby High Tatra mountains became popular. Nowadays Poprad is a lot more than simply a ski resort – there are lots of historical buildings and monuments in the square and central street of the city.
Poprad’s old architecture still reflects the historical Polish and German influences. Take note of the early gothic church of St. Egidius, built in the 13th century. It is one of the few Slovakian churches that retains traces of interior wall paintings from the middle ages. A Renaissance bell tower is also an undoubtable must-see! It was built in 1592 and has three original bells standing next to the church. If you are fond of museums you should definitely visit Podtatranske Museum. It is also known as “Museum under Tatras”.
