Michael: I am studying Anthropology at Copenhagen University. I am currently in Shanghai to do fieldwork on the topic of sustainable city planning, where I have chosen the ongoing development of Dongtan as the case for my masters’ thesis. I plan to stay in China for 4 months and my fieldwork will be conducted both in Shanghai and on Chongming Island.
In relation to my research on Chongming Island, I plan 2 or 3 weeklong stays on the island to investigate the local Chinese residents’ everyday life and understanding of the enormous building project. My problem is that I still haven’t found a place to stay on Chongming Island. I have found your name on the internet, and since you are an English speaking guide that previously has been on the island, I thought that you might have an idea or proposal for me. I need to say that I am a student, so I can’t afford expensive hotels I have found a project in Qiangwei Ecology Village where tourists can participate at so-called ‘Happy farmers life’ programs – that looks good. Do you think it’s also possible for westerners to participate? Since I (unfortunately) can’t speak Chinese, I sincerely hope that I will be able to find locals on Chongming Island that speak (a little) English and might be interested in an interview or two.
I know that it is a little unorthodox to write a request like this – but I hope it’s OK.
I hope for your cooperation and understanding.

Maria: My name is Maria. I am looking for a guide who will accompany my friend Melli in Shanghai for the first day of her stay. She will arrive with her husband and 3-year-old daughter in March 2012 and is scarred about her new life and the “big city”. They will stay in Shanghai for about 3 month and live in their own apartment. A lot of things will be organized by the company of her husband, but organizing daily life will be her part. So we (colleagues from work) think of a gift very special. Now how you come into the picture.
Do you also offer being a guide (hourly-wise) for showing someone around in his new neighborhood? Like: where is the Supermarket/Food Market, learning about new food (vegetables, fruit, delicatessen) where can I get European food, where is a nice restaurant, playground, public transportation etc. How does public transportation work, how to order a taxi etc. etc.
You see, all this daily little things which you need to learn in a new culture, a new city. We think of giving a voucher to Melli as a present. So we also have to think of how bringing the money to you. Please let me know if you can offer this and what are the conditions. Looking forward hearing from you and with kind regards from Switzerland
Andrea: My family, (my husband, 17 year old son and me),will arrive in Shanghai on Monday, October 10. We will have Tuesday the 11th and Wednesday the 12th together before my husband leaves for a business trip inland. On those two days, I would like to arrange private, guided excursions outside of the city for each day for the three of us. One day, I would like us to visit a water town, Wuzhen or Zhouzhuang. The other day, I would like to get your suggestions for an itinerary. On Thursday (13th), Friday(14th), Saturday(15th) and Sunday(16th), I would like to engage a private guide, with car and driver, to accompany me and my son to various sights around the city, (Xiangyang Road, Nanjing Road, Jiading, etc.), for several hours per day. We are very intersted in history and art, not so much shopping and tourist sights. We would like to get to know Shanghai from a native's perspective. If you are available, would you please forward your suggestions for iteneraries and rates as soon as possible?
We are staying at the Crown Plaza Century Park. My husband travels to Shanghai often, I have been once, and this is my son's first time.
Thank you, and I look forward to your response.
