Scenic Spot Introduction

Datong is the barrier of Shanxi Province, the gateway to the north, and the throat of Shanxi, Hebei, and Mongolia. It borders Ulanqab in Inner Mongolia across the Great Wall to the north and has been a strategic location for military strategists throughout history. It is known as the "key to the north"

Datong City is one of the first batch of national historical and cultural cities, with a history of more than 2000 years of construction. It is one of the nine ancient capitals of China and was once the capital of the Southern and Northern Wei dynasties, the capital of the Liao, Jin, and Yuan dynasties, and a key town in the Ming and Qing dynasties. There are numerous historical sites in the city, with more than 3000 immovable cultural relics

Hanging Temple(Xuankong Si) is a temple complex that combines Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism.The Hanging Temple was first built in the 15th year of the Taihe reign of the Northern Wei Dynasty (491 AD) and has been repaired throughout history. In 2010, it was selected as one of the "Top 10 Most Dangerous Buildings in the World" by Time magazine. The Hanging Temple is about 60 meters above the ground, and the highest Three Teachings Hall is 90 meters above the ground. It is the earliest and best preserved wooden cliff ancient building in China.

Yungang Grottoes, formerly known as Lingyan Temple and Shifo Temple. Located 17 kilometers west of Datong City, Shanxi Province, at the southern foot of Wuzhou Mountain, it is one of the famous grottoes in China. The excavation of Yungang Grottoes began during the Northern Wei Dynasty. In the third year of the reign of Emperor Shi of Northern Wei (398 AD), the excavation of Yungang Grottoes lasted for about 150 years and went through dynasties such as Northern Wei, Eastern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi, Sui, Tang, etc. There are currently 45 main caves, 252 small and large niches, and more than 59000 stone carvings, making it a treasure trove of Chinese grotto art.  

The Yungang Grottoes, as the first royal authorized grotto excavated in China, reflect the political ambitions of the Northern Wei Dynasty. Compared with many grotto temples in China, the Yungang Grottoes have the most Western style, with the strongest Hu style and charm. Among them, there are elements of Indian, Central and Western Asian art, as well as Greek and Roman architectural styles, decorative patterns, and visual features, reflecting the relationship between them and major civilizations around the world.

Huayan Temple is an early and well preserved architectural complex of Liao and Jin Dynasty temples in China, and is also one of the three major surviving Liao Dynasty temples in China. Huayan Temple is a collection of various cultural relics such as Liao and Jin Dynasty architecture, small wooden sky palace towers, painted sculptures, murals, etc., all of which are among the best in their kind and occupy an important position in the research of Chinese architectural history, religious history, and art history
