Information about Mont Saint-Michel

An island commune in Normandy, France at the mouth of the Couesnon River is Mont Saint-Michael. It’s been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979 and over three million people visit each year. Tourists are advised not to attempt crossing the flats by foot without checking the tide tables first. The mudflats surrounding the island have areas of deep mud and quicksand. Mount Saint-Michael also has steep staircases, sheer drops and some uneven ground.

Omelets are a culinary specialty in Mont Saint Michel. They whip them until frothy and light and sell them in most restaurants and cafes. Some restaurants only make omelets at certain hours of the day so when making reservations make sure you do so during ‘omelet time.’  Saltmarsh lamb dishes are also popular on the island. Try the La Mere Poulard Restaurant for some good authentic Mont Saint Michael food.

Visit the Abbey of Mont Saint Michel to see a monastery that the island has grown around. Once a prison, a few prison-era showpieces remain like a human hamster wheel that was used for lifting supplies into and out of the complex. At the Notre-Dame Sous Terre Chapel you can see a chapel built by the first Benedictine monks in 966.
