The historic town of Trakai is a lakeside resort area about 28 kilometers from Lithuania’s capital city of Vilnius. Only a little over 5,000 people live here, but they represent a mix of nationalities including Russians, Poles, Lithuanians, Tatars, Karaims and Jews.
Trakai is a popular tourist destination known for its more than 200 lakes and beautiful national parks, the Trakai Historical National Park and the Aukstadvaris Regional Park. The town itself is built on water, with its most notable feature the Trakai Island Castle which holds many summer festivals and concerts.
Some of its most visited attractions include the beautiful Tyszkiewicz Palace, the Karaim Kenesa wooden synagogue, the Peninsula Castle, and the Old Post Office building. The many lovely lakes in the region are popular for sailing and other water activities. There are quite a few lovely resort hotels and bed and breakfasts in the area that welcome tourists.
