Makay is accessible only from May to November.  Contrary to Isalo, which has a central plateau, Makay is a succession of deep valleys and mountains that are difficult to access.  On the lower levels, pure and transparent water winds up between high cliffs.  On the high level, on the other hand, a scorching heat.  Inside some caves, ancient drawings add to the mystery of the place. 

Makay was sculpted in huge massifs of crystalline rocks by erosion for several hundred millions of years. Stretching over more than 7,500sq km in South-West Madagascar, it is a real monument of nature, and it’s difficult access makes it one of the least explored and exploited areas.
Tropical rains cause significant disintegration of sandstone which is manifested by landslides, formation of caves, and agglomeration of large amounts of white quartz at the bottom of the canyons.

The valleys with a depth of several hundred meters were suitable for the development of many plants and animals species which have been self-sufficient for millions of years to generate new species. Among all the hidden treasures of the sanctuary, a team of scientists discovered what may be the most ancient petroglyphs in the Island in many caves and rock shelters of the Massif. Some have been identified by scientists as dating from the 13th century.

Makay is a great site for trekking and hiking; Indulge in 03 to 05 days walk to walk through the mysterious world of valleys, cliffs, forests, caves and lakes inhabited by crocodiles.

You will often be wet across rivers or sometimes head in the clouds when you are on top of cliffs. A human adventure that takes you to share the daily life of Baras, a semi-nomadic people, breeder zebu. An intense moment to be lived once in his life.

DETAILS OF ITINERARIES: Starting from Morondava

DAY 01: Morondava – Mandrognarivo

Early drive from Morondava passing in Malaimbandy and arrive in Mandrognarivo in the evening. Overnight Camping in the Village.

DAY 02: Mandrognarivo – Bekinana

Drive to the bumpy road to Bekinana, the Last track by 4X4, transport will be by Zebu car and Porters. Here start the Small Makay. First night in bivouac in the river and dinner in the vicinity of the river. After your breakfast in Bivouac, you will penetrate for the first time inside this « reuniform » Massif. Remoting Manapanda River with possibility of incursion inside Massif Forest with Locals and porteurs.

DAY 03-04: Great Makay

Today is the day to explore the “Grand Makay”,  Canyon forest and Wildlife, River Bed

DAY 05: Top of Makay

Created by Bara Guide, and a Pisteur local, trekking track with normal speed, rythm. Following the « méandre » or Diaclase of Manampada river until you will arrive in a Grottoes, amazing. After excursion in the axes of river, back to bivouac place for Lunch. Afternoon, 03 hours walk to the “belvedere” point of view from the top of Makay Massif to admire this amazing canyons

DAY 06: Back to Bekinana

After breakfast, back to Bekinana. Discover an isolated Grottoes in  the Sakalava plateau. Spending your last hours inside this Massif by the descent to the village of Tsivoko with exceptionnal Biodiversity. In evening, you will arrive in the bivouac camp already set up by Porteurs. Dinner and overnight.
