MARETH, MATMATA & TOUJANE

Departing from the island of Djerba, we will spend the day admiring the spectacular & rugged landscapes of the region around Matmata. We leave Djerba and cross to the mainland via the local ferry. Our first stop is Mareth, the famous World War II defense line and battlefield, contested by Rommel & his German troops and the British divisions under General Montgomery. We see many original bunkers in the area, as well as visit the Mareth Museum, with an option of visiting Rommel's bunker. We continue to Matmata, where we will be invited by local families to visit their unusual troglodyte homes. These have been lived in by local inhabitants since antiquity. We will also visit one of the largest troglodyte dwellings, Sidi Driss, where the first Star Wars movie was filmed. After our picnic lunch (supplied), we take one of the most panoramic routes in the country through the Matmata mountains.

The landscape is breathtaking, as we approach the Berber hilltop village of Toujane. Toujane was a outpost on the Gabes-Medenine caravan route; 2 medieval forts face each other across the road which enters the village. We stop for photos and a brief walk to explore the village. Return to Djerba via the ferry at Ajim.
